The Next Question

In our first Everlane case study, we covered the launch: $1.5M in impact in 90 days, driven by Onward's Checkout+ upgrade. That answered whether Onward pays for itself.

A year later, the more important question is whether it changes the customer. Does a shopper who starts with Onward become a better long-term customer for the brand? Some merchants worry the opposite happens, and that shoppers nudged into protection quietly resent it. If that were true, it would show up in the data: protected customers would come back less, and drop Onward the first chance they got.

Everlane's first year says the opposite.

How We Measured It

We went back to launch in October 2025 and grouped every new Everlane customer by the month of their first order, giving 12 monthly cohorts through September 2026.

Within each month, we split customers into two groups: those whose first order included Onward, and those whose first order didn't. Then we followed both groups forward and counted every order placed after the first. Same brand, same months. The only difference at the start was one choice at checkout.

Customers Who Start With Onward Are Worth More

Customers whose first order included Onward generated 11.5% more repeat revenue per customer than those whose first order didn't.

They also came back more often. 30.7% of Onward first-order customers placed a repeat order, compared with 28.4% without, an 8% higher repeat purchase rate. And the gap wasn't a one-month fluke. Onward customers out-earned in 11 of 12 monthly cohorts.

Why It Happens

A Better Post-Purchase Experience Builds a Better Customer

Shoppers have been trained by Amazon to expect that when something goes wrong, they can fix it themselves, quickly, without chasing anyone down. Onward gives Everlane customers that same experience, and adds a reward for coming back. Each piece removes a reason a customer might not order again.

Problems get solved without a support ticket. When an order is lost, stolen, or damaged, the customer files through Onward's branded claim portal instead of emailing Everlane. Claims resolve in a median of 14 hours. Even through the December holiday peak, Onward absorbed the claim volume with no added load on Everlane's support team.

A bad fit doesn't have to become a refund. On Satisfaction Guarantee claims, 53% ended in a reorder or store credit instead of a refund. The sale, and the customer, stay with Everlane.

CashBack gives customers a reason to return. Every protected order returns 10% in Everlane store credit, and that credit pulls customers back for the next purchase.

  • More than 300,000 Everlane customers hold CashBack credit today

  • CashBack has driven $3.2M in repeat revenue

  • $7.20 in revenue comes back for every $1 of CashBack redeemed

Put together, the customer who starts with Onward has a smoother first experience, gets problems fixed fast, and has credit waiting for the next order. That's what shows up as higher lifetime value.

Customers Choose Onward Again

The clearest sign that shoppers value Onward is what they do on their next order. 42.5% of new Everlane customers added Onward to their first purchase. Among those customers, 59.6% of repeat orders included Onward again, about 40% higher than the rate on first orders.

By the second order, the customer has already seen Everlane's delivery firsthand. They know the brand, and many are holding CashBack credit. Nobody needs protection explained to them at that point, and most of them choose it anyway.

That's the answer to the "are shoppers being pushed into this?" question. A service people resent doesn't get picked more often the second time around.

What Year One Delivered

The LTV lift sits on top of a program that also pays for itself. In its first 12 months, Onward delivered more than $5M in total value to Everlane, made up of CashBack-driven repeat revenue, revenue share on customer-paid premiums, claims coverage paid by Onward instead of Everlane, and CashBack redemptions Onward sponsored. Across all checkouts, 52.4% of Everlane shoppers choose the upgrade.

Key Takeaways for Premium DTC Brands

  • Measure post-purchase by lifetime value. The real return on Onward shows up over the following year, in customers who come back more often and spend more when they do.

  • The first order sets the relationship. Customers who start with Onward generate more repeat revenue and reorder more often, in 11 of 12 monthly cohorts.

  • Self-service keeps customers happy. Fast claim resolution and store credit instead of refunds turn the worst moments into reasons to stay.

  • CashBack compounds. Store credit turns one protected order into a reason for the next one, with $7.20 back for every $1 redeemed.

  • Customers opt back in. A 59.6% repeat-order attach rate shows shoppers see protection as a benefit, not a charge they were steered into.
